Chart House Restraurant

notes by Joel Haertling

In 1981 the owners of The Chart House restaurants saw the Leaneagh house. and were very impressed with the design, so they approached Haertling for a design for a big restaurant they planned to build in Mamaroneck, New York. The lot was located directly adjacent to the east basin of Mamaroneck. In his design notes there are indications that Haertling was working with several concepts and inspirations from the ocean. He pictured the customer entering up into a garden, as in the Volsky house. Incidental influences included wood pilings, and the shape of boats and sails.

Haertling eventually developed a design based on the aspen leaf house, with the large pinnacle pointed out to sea, and a smaller one serving as an entry on the opposite side. The floor plan indicates a heavy usage of curved wall forms, and multiple levels to maximize the view of the harbor from each table.

Unfortunately, the project was delayed for several years, and when The Chart House finally did decide to go ahead with the project, Haertling had already died.
