Dammann I House

CAH notes on the Dr. James Dammann House

The building is an exciting extrusion from a simple cruciform plan.

Open interior space spirals three floors, directed by interconnected pitched roofs.

The plan expresses the desire of the owner for privacy for the parents. Because of the sloping site this was made a vertical separation. Living room made as an extension of the bedroom when desired by opening wide folding doors.

Upper floor room requested as a study/television viewing room open to below, but closable by heavy drapery. This room has 54" high balcony rail on balcony to compensate for extreme height. This room is also to double as guest room.

Owner is IBM technical executive who is an accomplished artist and consequently needed large wall space for hanging paintings, therefor the large square wall forms provided this space. These wall forms also delineate the upper floor balcony, the living room fireplace, the central stairway, the mechanical space, and the kitchen.

Cost of construction was $33,500.00
