Davis House

Bill Davis and his family of four valued privacy foremost, and on their relatively remote lot on Belleview Drive they enjoyed an unobstructed view of the Flatirons to the northwest. To accommodate this spectacular view and the families wishes for privacy, Haertling designed this house with a snail-like form that provides privacy from the street side , and opens to a high-peaked living room with extremely high windows oriented toward their private valley framing the Flatirons.

This was the first of a series of houses designed by Haertling with a curvilinear roof form. The Davis's, like many of Haertling's clients were free spirited people interested in visual beauty and principles of organic architecture. They wanted a house that would be informal, and not pretentious. Sylvia Davis valued practicality, and requested a farmers porch with a set tub and a woodshed as a transition zone between her garden and kitchen. Both the dining area and the living area have a spectacular view of the mountain terrain. The master bedroom bathtub is situated next to a window adjacent to a very private veranda nested in the trees with a view of the Flatirons. The main staircase , surrounded by steel rods set into the foundation, is in the middle of the house.

When the Davis's sold the house, the new owner wanted to add a garage. They contacted Haertling to do the addition, and he was so pleased with the result that he said it actually improved the design. Unfortunately, this was not the case with several of Haertling's other buildings that have been ruined by renovation, additions or demolition in part.
