The Roitz residence of 1978 is located in west Boulder on a steep hillside lot overlooking the town. The clients wanted a low cost house that would be energy efficient, utilizing passive solar and underground insulation. They further requested that the house would take advantage of the views of the mountains and the city, and accommodate two adults, two daughters and a darkroom for their profession as photographers. In fact, Haertling was running the Haertling Art Gallery at the time, and accepted a trade of photographs as partial payment for architectural services.
Essentially a pyramid with a recessed balcony, the building takes maximum advantage of limited sunlight due to the buildings proximity to the mountains on the west side. The living room is central to activities in the kitchen and on the balconies. The design of the lower level features curved concrete walls leading to the main and side entries, and a garage.
